A wide overall response suggests that , first, the snakes will eat anything they can overpower . And secondly , the snakes eat everything they can swallow .
It's a fair comment , but not quite accurate.
The problem is not the answer, but the question itself ... To give a definitive answer , it is important to know which species is discussed.

What do snakes eat ? Well, for starters , all snakes are predators , regardless of their environment, whether land or water. They are experts in the use of prey resources in their habitat. Prey resources include vertebrate " hot blood " (birds and mammals) , vertebrates "coolness " (amphibians , fish and reptiles) and " invertebrates " (insects , spiders , crustaceans , snails and worms ) . Some snakes also eat eggs.
There's a snake in particular snake tentacles ( tentacle Erpeton ), which also feed on aquatic plants. This is the only known snake that eat the vegetation.

There are two factors that determine what you eat a snake : the environment (habitat ) living animal, and the animal's size .
Determine habitat availability (abundance ) and certain types of prey . In general, the preferred prey of any particular species coincides with the abundance of specific prey species in this habitat .
Understandably, the prey of a western diamond -back rattlesnake ( Crotalus atrox ) living near the suburbs differ greatly from living in the desert miles away from civilization .
Snake size also determines the dam. It is very common for young snakes to swallow prey completley different from adults of this species. This is usually the case in which no significant difference in size between young and adult snakes of the same species .
Conversely , if there is little difference in size between young and adult snakes and prey are the same.
In some species , males and females have different prey preferences
